bells palsy

Post a new topicby daveyboy2 on Tue Oct 09, 2007 3:35 pm

I have had bells palsy 2 times now. Once on each side of my face. Is there a limit to how many times you can get this??
I seem to be experiencing a mild case of it again and I was under the assumption I had used up my quota.
Thanks

I have had bellspalsy since I was 9 years old . I have had MRI's and visited neurologists as being so young and having bellspalsy at that age was odd. My symptoms have ranged, when I was younger the symptoms were trecherous, I had severe headaches, so severe it felt like someone was banging my head against a wall, and the pain would come from the back of my head to the front just on the side it was affecting. When I was in my early 20's the symptoms weren't as bad as it would just pop up. The last time I had bells palsy was 6 years ago, this was the longest waiting time yet, my kneck muscles were stiff, and I thought it was the type of work I was doing as I never occured this symptom before, but the next day I had paralysis on the left side. I just got bellspalsy again today, I had symptoms for 5 days but they were very mild, headaches and a ringing and slight pain in my left ear which I thought I might just have an ear ache, last night my eye wasn't closing all the way and it was getting dry, this morning I had slight paralysis and this afternoon it's gotten a little worse. I'm usually prescribed prednisone to help with the swelling of the nerve. When the bellspalsy hits it is very frustrating as people do not understand how hard it is to go in public (expecially when it's really bad), eat at a restaurant or friends, it's hard as you take a lot longer and it's not pleasing when food is falling out of your mouth or you have problems pronouncing the letter "P". Take things slow, one step at a time and think positive.

I find that being careful on a windy day, cutting back alchol intake, decreasing stress really helped over the last 6 years as I said before that is the longest wait ever and I'm just hoping it will be even longer next time. Do a lot of face excersices to get the muscles working and maybe consider physiotherapy, I have done this they use these electrode things, trust me it doesn't feel good but it helps.

I hope this helps a little.

Thanks for your reply. Your information is very helpful. The second time I had it I did the electrods on my face and did the theropy and it really helped. My last episode only lasted about a week and the mild symptoms went away. I agree that if I take the stress and booze away it helps tremendously.

Thanks again and good luck
