coming out of a coma

Post a new topicby livingwith on Tue Feb 05, 2008 6:43 pm

Hi,
I am a diabetic and on the week of october 1,2007 i had a bad cold. On oct.4,2007 I failed to show up for work. I was passed out on my bedroom floor and my neighbour had to break in to get to me. I went to the first hospital and they said i had pneumonia and proceeded to intubate me but put the tube in the wrong lung and ended up giving me double lung infection. This caused my sugar to rise to 43(canadian measurement for sugar levels) that put me into the coma and it lasted until oct. 18,2...Read the full article

Linda, thank you for your story. My husband went into a coma since January 31, 2008 until present. He just went off the vent today and was able to breath on his own. I am not sure what the out come is going to be so I am so afraid. The doctor is asking lots of negative questions and I am so encourage by your story. The doctor still do not know why but they think that it was cause by alcohol, low sugar(20), stress, and aspiration to the lungs. All day today, he does not follow any command so I am praying. Thank you again for the story.

MY prayers are with you and I hope your husband comes fully back. The doctors were afraid of what if any brain damage there was going to be.I say no more then before this happened...lol.I find humor helps especially when I do not remember anything. One thing I will mention ,I was in a relationship before this happened( a new one). After about a month of recovery I felt like wasn't allowed to heal because he became overbearing and controlling with my life so I ended it and started to really heal. Your husband might push you away but don't let him, talk and tell him you love him and give him some space( not too much) When I woke up I was extrememly angry. The doctors said when someone is in a come they feel like they have been tortured. believe me it is true. The nurses were fantastic to me as my family have told me but I woke up hating them all. Of course, I feel bad now..But it does get easier to accept what you can't remember....Take care and God Bless....

Thank you, I feel so discourage becuase today it's been 18 days since my husband have been in a coma. He is not responding at all. He is able to open his eyes, move arms and legs, able to cough, and when I try to go close to his eyes like a threat, he does blink. His condition involved alcohol, lack of oxygen to the brain, low blood sugar, depression, and he was also on a medication (ritalin for ADHD) since 1992. The last time some spoke to him was on wednesday at 10:00 pm on the 30th and they found him unresponsive at 7:00 am on Thursday the 31st. I was also told that he have not been eating for the past 3 days before this happen to him. The prognos was so poor, it scares me. Please let me know if you know any one who have been in the same case. Every story that I read online are related to a car accident. This does not give me any hope. My husband is very proud and would never want to be in a vegetate state. He would rather die. If you know or anyone know anything to help me, please, please, tell me so I can help.
