Help with seizures pleaseHi, I am wondering if anyone can help me, my 18yr old handicapped daughter started having seizures approx 3yrs ago with the onset of puberty. Her seizures only occur on waking during the night or early morning. She has tegretol to help control these, although I am not sure how successful this is.
My query is that twice recently she has had 2 fits in 1 night and has woken up in the morning with one eye swollen shut, she is very bothered by this and keeps rubbing it, and also rubs her nose madly, this goes on for approx 24 hrs. Her consultant doesnt know why this is, so i was wondering if anyone knows why htis is happening, or if it has happend to anyone else. Any suggestions woiuld be appreciated, Thanks C
Re: Help with seizures pleaseWhat kind of swelling is it? Do you think its like an allergy or do you think its more like an injury? Maybe during seizures in the night she is causing herself some abrasions. Maybe the skin in those areas is rubbing against something during seizures? Just an idea.

I think the reason why your daughter rubs her eye is because her inside of her eye hurts from the over stimulation of or mis firing of the neurons in her brain can be affecting nerves in her eye near the optic nerve which sits close to the brain. I know when i have a seizure my eyes hurt in the optic area and my left eye droops when I get tired. maybe your daughter had a seizure during her sleep( known as nocturnal seizure) and then at the same time the over stimulation caused the eye to first droop during the nocturnal seizure then become swollen shut when she was waking in the morning because the neuron chemicals in the brain were still misfiring in the morning time. I would go back to neurologist with your doctor and ask him why that happens to your daughter. good luck and god bless you both.
Re: Help with seizures pleaseHi wildhorses353, thanks for your reply, it sounds helpful, I will mention it to her consultant.
I just want to clarigy, she does not rub her eye, it is just swollen by iteself when she wakes up in the morning after her seizures. She DOES rub her nose madly though, but again only after her seizures. Thanks Chezzi.
Re: Help with seizures pleaseMay I inquire what your daughter's handicap is? Also, what type of seizures has she been diagnosed with? I wish I had answers for you, but for now I am only able to offer support. I too have posted regarding my teenage daughter who has a disability. Best wishes. Jeril
Re: Help with seizures pleaseHi jeril, my daughter does not have a diagnosis either for her handicap or her seizures. She is developmentaly delayed in all areas and functions at around the 1 yr old level. Her seizures only started with the onset of puberty and dont seem to respond to the medication she is taking.
Regards, Chezzi
