Regular Inderal or Inderal LAMy doctor wants me to start taking Inderal for Essential Tremor which is getting worse. I've read so much about it...is it best to start with small dose or just take 80mg Inderal LA. I'm pretty sensitive to meds so want to make sure I do it the right way.

I wish you luck with your new medication ... please keep us advised on it's effect on you and if it curbs your ETs ... Have a great week, John
Re: Regular Inderal or Inderal LAThanks for responding. I will post as to how it goes. I hope to hear from others that have used the Inderal (propranolol) regular or long acting.

Re: Regular Inderal or Inderal LAHi Karen -
I'm 29(M) and have been taking propranolol/inderal for I think 7 years. I can't even remember exactly when I started it's been so long. For the first 5ish years I took the LA. One 80mg pill in the morning. In the past couple years I've been on the regular kind, 40mg twice a day. I switched because I was told the generic of the 80mg LA was discontinued and/or unavailable. This was before I really investigated all this stuff on the internet. So I don't know if it was really unavailable, but I switched to the regular none the less. First, I'll say that I haven't really known any difference between the two. I take the first 40 at breakfast and the second usually in the afternoon. That seems to be the best spacing out of the two based off of what I've read about low long it stays in your system. I'm very pleased with the results of the medication. When I was younger I always was unsteady and shook some. It was worse in public and nervous situations. But it persisted to most all situations and others noticed it even when I did not. I started (was in college I believe) on the inderal and it really helped. Also seems to relax me on the whole. I don't experience any of the "side effects" that are commonly mentioned. I really hate taking medication unnecessarily, so believe me, if this didn't make a difference I would stop. Don't know if I will continue with it my whole life, but as long as there are no negatives, I'm not too worried about it. Every couple years I try to ween myself off of it or reduce to half dosage. I do this just to see if I still really need it. Still feel the shakyness when I do. So I guess I'll keep on. By the way... don't ever stop taking it cold turkey. It's very bad for you and your body needs a chance to slowly get used to not having it.

Like yourself, others have started commenting on it more than ever even when I don't realize I'm shaking. And its definitely worse in stressful situations or now even social situations. Karen
Re: Regular Inderal or Inderal LAI have been on Regular Inderal and Inderal LA for 30 yrs. My problem is that Inderal will cause me to go into a depression. So, I stopped takeing the Inderal for some years. Until, I could not write, and I needed to be able to do that because of working. So I had to go back on the Inderal along with Prozac for the depression. I started on the Inderal LA and was on it for 5 yrs. My tremors were getting worse so I visited a Neurologist. He explained to me that the Inderal LA sometimes does not work as well on some people. So, he has me takeing 40mg three times a day when I eat. It has helped some. But, I also have General Anxiety Disorder which aggrevates my tremors. I have found by takeing an extra Inderal (40mg) instead of anti anxiety medicine it helps with the anxiety. The Neurologist agreed. Don't know if this helps.
