OUR DIAGNOSTIC NEUROPHYSIOLOGY LABORATORY
Electroencephalograms (EEG) In order to diagnose, treat and monitor disorders such as epilepsy, movement disorders and brain damage, the noninvasive EEG is a crucial tool. It measures the electrical activity in the cerebral cortex, providing important information about the function or lack of function in different areas of the brain. We provide day-long video EEG monitoring for difficult movement disorder cases. This enables us to coincide clinical presentation with EEG findings. We also provide ambulatory EEG, which allows patients to remain at home and still receive continuing diagnostic study for up to 72 hours. State-of-the-art digital technology and a spike and seizure detection program ensure the highest quality, most accurate results. Electromyograms (EMG) Used to diagnose neuropathy, the EMG enables us to evaluate nerve and muscle function. Needle electrodes are inserted into the patient's muscle tissue; abnormalities indicate nerve damage and degeneration. Nerve Conduction Velocity (NCV) NCV tests help evaluate nerve and muscle function. By applying electrodes and delivering small electrical shocks, nerve function can be assessed. The results of these tests are used along with the labora-tory results and the clinical exam to confirm a particular diagnosis. Brain Stem Auditory Evoked Potential (AEP) This painless procedure uses highly sensitive amplifiers and computer averaging equipment to record responses. It's a test proven very useful for screening hearing and balance problems in newborns, children and adults, and it's indispensable in neurophysiological assessment of child and adult patients. Visual Evoked Potential (VEP) This test evaluates the function of the visual pathway from the retina to the occipital cortex. It is useful in detecting an anterior visual conduction disturbance in diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis. Somatosensory Evoked Potential (SEP) This test is useful in diagnosing Multiple Sclerosis and other demyelinating diseases. Through electrical stimulation of the arms and legs, we measure conduction of activity in the spinal cord. Autonomic Nervous System Testing Our board-certified neurologists also offer testing of the autonomic nervous system, including sudomotor-sympathetic skin potential testing and Best Beat R-R Valsalva Testing.
