OUR DIAGNOSTIC NEUROSONOLOGY LABORATORY

Neurosonology, or ultrasound, gives us a painless, noninvasive way of looking inside and viewing images of the human body. Our neurosonology lab is one of the few in southeast Michigan accredited by the Intersocietal Comission for the Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories (ICAVL), assuring high-quality patient care and state-of-the-art diagnostic technology. Our lab is staffed by a board-certified neurologist, neurosonologist and registered vascular technologists. Our state-of-the-art neurosonology laboratory utilizes both the Transcranial ultrasound and the carotid Doppler ultrasound.

Transcranial Doppler Ultrasound (TCD)

Especially useful for children with sickle cell anemia and at risk for stroke, this painless test can help evaluate the need for transfusion. It can measure cerebrovascular blood flow velocities, detect severe stenosis in the major basal intracranial arteries and help us assess patterns and extent of collateral circulation. We also use TCD to evaluate and follow patients with vasoconstriction, intracranial vascular occlusive diseases and arteriovenous malformations.

Carotid Doppler Ultrasound (CDU)

Carotid doppler ultrasound measures the blood flow velocity in the carotid arteries (the two major arteries on each side of the neck that carry blood to the head). With this test, we can evaluate the risk of stroke by estimating the degree of carotid artery stenosis in patients with various stroke risk factors such as hypertension, hyperlipidemia, etc. Painless and usually taking less than 30 minutes, this test helps assess patients in need of surgical intervention or carotid artery stenting.
