OUR SLEEP LAB

American Academy of Sleep MedicineWhen people have sleep problems, they often don't let their physicians know. Yet these disorders are more severe than most people realize. They can cause functional impairment, disability and serious health problems. Successful treatment can reduce hypertension, stroke and heart failure (resulting from obstructive sleep apnea, or OSA) and prevent psychiatric problems (associated with narcolepsy and OSA). Most important, successful treatment of sleep disorders can improve your patient's quality of life. We are proud to announce we have received national accreditation by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine--making us one of only 30 sleep clinics in the state and just nine in southeast Michigan to achieve this distinction. We have a board-certified sleep specialist on staff to see all patients.

Our three-bed sleep lab provides a comprehensive program for diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders. Sleep studies are conducted six days a week in three comfortable private rooms set up much like a bedroom.

After a referral by the patient's primary care physician, the first step is a comprehensive history and physical exam. If a sleep study is necessary, a one- or two-night stay may be required. Our physicians will then work with the referring doctor to commence treatment, which may include medication, changes in daily habits or work schedule, weight loss, surgery or a simple nasal mask to improve breathing.

We utilize state-of-the-art digital technology in performing multiple sleep disorder tests, including:

  • Overnight Sleep Study (Clinical Polysomnogram - CPSG): Aids in diagnosis of OSA, periodic leg movements and insomnia.

  • MSLT (Multiple Sleep Latency Test): Can diagnose idiopathic hypersomnolence vs narcolepsy.

  • Daytime Shift-Work Polysomnogram: Daytime studies for people accustomed to sleeping during the day.

  • CPAP/BiPAP Titration: Therapeutic studies following a diagnostic study, where applicable.
